Croix-en-Ternois

While we were waiting for our car to be built we met up with Angus and Tessa and decided to go over to France on a track day with them. After a rendevous at Caterham we headed down the M25 and over on a Ferry to spend the night at a wonderful little Farmhouse in Brimeux, just outside Montreuil and had a meal at a local restaurant. French food really is great. The next morning we got under way bright and early heading for the track. Apart from some fun organising some petrol (French country petrol stations are generally closed on Sunday and do not take foreign cards) we arrived to an already busy paddock. John, who we had met the previous day, was there with his blackbird engined seven.

The day was actually a test day and not a track day meaning that overtaking was allowed anywhere, actual race cars were on the track, and driving was more full on than usual. Not to be deterred Angus went out for a session and came back in with a huge grin. Passenger rides ensued with more huge grins. At the track there were three 20 minute sessions each hour - one for tintops, one for touring cars, and one for sevens and single seat racers. John was kind enough to take me out for a ride in his car which was blisteringly quick, and the immense cornering forces actually left a bruise on my arm for two weeks!. Bike engine cars are very lightweight for their power and even with me as balast he was lifting one of his front wheels while going through the fast left hander.

Angus tried out a spare set of slicks that John had available and was still managing to slide around the corners when he wanted, including a 180 spin much to his passengers enjoyment and his surprise.

The Croix track is in the countryside as these pictures show and has a long straight, reasonable runoff, and a number of tight turns which are perfect for sevens.

Facilities are quite good with power, water and a canteen / restaurant.

Costs for a test day in France are much lower than a track day in the UK and if you can organise a cheap ferry ride over it is possible to get the day + ferry + a bed and breakfast all for cheaper than a single UK trackday.

The best part about the trip apart from meeting other like minded individuals was that it confirmed to us that getting a seven was definitely the right thing to do. So much fun in such a little car!! The reaction that Angus and Tessa’s car received while travelling through French villages was amazing with entire coffee shops full of people stopping to turn around and then stand up to watch the car go past.

The most hilarious incident was a young kid riding a bike who was so flabbergasted that he stacked it and then got up and came running after the car to see what it was!
