I wandered along to Castle Combe on the Mayday bank holiday Monday and thoroughly enjoyed the day.
Very wet on the way there, but no queuing to get in once I arrived, a tenner to get in, good quality parking available, easy access to excellent vantage points all around the track, no crowds so no queuing for either food or drink, and everyone was enjoying themselves even though it was wet.
Watched some qualifying, then wandered up to the pits and went around and had a chat to the various drivers and mechanics, poked and prodded the various cars, wandered through the cars lining up to go out for the first race taking photographs, watched the race from the start line, wandered up the hill to watch the action.
Racing was brilliant with cars not going so fast that they were just a blur but proper racing with 4 wheel drifts, bumping tyres, some wings coming off the sevens, the race lead changing up to five times per lap, 3 cars abreast going through the esses, and the second place getter in the second caterham race finishing minus a rear wing, nose cone and bonnet.
Also managed to watch the formula ford and a few other formulas racing all for the one admission price. Excellent day, excellent racing, excellent value. Then drove home in the rain, only for it to dry up in time for the first BBQ of the year. Magic.
Guess who is not going to go to another F1 event ever? My advice is go watch some real racing for 1/20th the price.
